Zaha Hadid and the Museum
The Contemporary Arts Center

A documentary video by Steve Gebhardt, following the construction of the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and the creative process and ideas of it's designer, Zaha Hadid. She is the first woman architect to design and build a museum in the United States. This European architect, pushing the envelope of design in a conservative Midwestern American city, supplies the drama for the piece. The video will show Zaha in various situations throughout the construction process, especially focusing on her persona. This should have an impact upon the viewer's perception of her, her creative process, and of her creation of the building itself.

The documentary begins with a computer generated walkthrough of the virtual building, her vision of the museum. We then will watch the actual building evolve via time-lapse photography and real-time digital video of the construction phase, from demolition of the existing buildings on the site until the opening night of the new museum. During the construction process we will talk to the people who brought Hadid's vision to reality. The mayor, the museum's director, ordinary citizens, architects and artists, and finally the designer and her staff all will be juxtaposed to the emerging building as it takes shape. We will hear Ms Hadid singing as well. The final scene is shot on opening night the audience gathers in the museum's theater to see the video projected on the screen. Their reaction to Zaha and her creation will be taped as she arrives with the museum's director, enters the building, then the theater, from the screen's point of view.
